This week saw my baby visiting hospital yet again, he was climbing on his train table to get his trains as he does frequently but he toppled over and hit the floor so I checked him over and panicked when I felt only what I can described as jelly lump on his head so decided to take him to hospital. The walk in is right next to the hospital so when I explained what had happened they advised to go to and A&E which I was glad they said as you never know what to do for the best and sometimes feel like a fraud going to A&E but the queue in the walk in was huge!
Firstly I was told by the A&E doctor that he was fine and to take home and they would see him a few days to make sure the swelling in his head had gone down, this then changed to he needed an X-Ray then it changed to he needed an urgent CT scan, I can't tell you how much emotion I went through and to be told that he need to be put asleep so they could do the scan resulted in me breaking down in tears. At this point I was on my own with all three children so phoned my Aunty to come and collect the bug two whilst I tried to get Myles asleep naturally so that they could perform the scan without general anesthetic, but he was having none of it despite it being well passed his bedtime, they then decided because he was under the age of 2 he couldn't be put asleep it the hospital we were at, so it was decided he needed to be transferred to children's hospital. Whilst this was going on I had spoke to my mam and she reminded me that the day before he had hit the same side of his head on the concrete floor in Morrison's when his brother had tripped him up so it was probably this that had started the bleeding despite there only been a small bump about the time.
It was a long long long wait for the ambulance to transfer to the hospital I was exhausted Myles wasn't given in to sleeping, 3 hours later the ambulance arrived and we had a nice trip to the hospital with some lovely paramedics and we got to the ward which he had been booked into to be told because it was after midnight by this point he couldn't be admitted so q us having to go to the children's A&E where we had to go through everything again and again I was told he needed a CT scan but it could wait to the morning so they would get him admitted to a ward, 3am and we were finally transferred to a ward where we put into a bay where I had to sleep in a bed with him.....that meant no sleeping for Mammy! So it took from arriving at hospital at 6pm to being told he was being transferred at 9pm to actually getting admitted at 3am!
10am the next morning and we saw the Doctor who said he may have fractured his skull and he had a hematoma but they wanted to see him playing and let him have something to eat and take it from there because the CT scan wouldn't change the treatment. Poor baby was up and down all day he was completely shattered but talking normally but just extra cuddly, by 4 pm we saw the doctor again and they were happy to discharge him without the scan as he hadn't been knocked unconscious or been sick and they cant do anything for a fractured skull so the risk of putting him under general anesthetic was unnecessary just to get a definite answer.
It was a long stressful time and I have some amazing friends asking about the baby boy and showing concern and an amazing family who helped with childcare and being my support network. We are still both recovering and he still isn't his normal himself and very unsteady on his feet and has a jumpy mammy who wont let him walk outside etc in case he falls, I will be wrapping him in cotton wool for sometime to come, the only thing guaranteed to get a smile out of him at the moment is animals, yesterday we popped into the pet shop and his face lit up when he saw the fishes.
So now we have to wait up to 2 weeks for the bleed to be reabsorbed, he currently has a lump about 6cms wide and it feels like a dent in his head but until the bleed is absorbed we wont be able to feel for definite.
